My practice routine has varied through the years (usually dictated by time available!!)
Even in my younger years, though, I never really had a scheduled practice...I just always played because I loved it. Alot of that time was spent playing along with my record collection (mid '70s, so ...Kiss, Ted Nugent, Rush, Foghat, REO, Montrose etc were my teachers) I began self-taught so everything was by ear and whatever else I could pick up from my brothers (who played a little bit) .I took my first lessons at age 16 (1979) and began being exposed to jazz and learning how to read music. Getting into jazz really strengthened my ears...which brings up another point. Everything you listen to influences you, so it's great to vary what you listen to often.
Currently when I practice I first turn on a metronome or drum machine to properly warm up (very important!!) this usually turns into a jam and then songwriting invariably ensues!!! Occasionally I'll transcribe part of a solo I dig or try to emulate a vocalist's phrasing (we're all trying to "sing" through our instruments right?) This is still absolutely the most import part of your practicing...using your ears to learn. Always try this first before consulting tabs or your teacher. It will become part of your musicality instead of part of your learned visual memory.
Good luck!
How about everybody else sharing there practice routine??? I'd love to hear about it!
